Bánh mì is a traditional Vietnamese sandwich made with a baguette.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 Cup White Vinegar
  • 1/2 Cup Water
  • 2 Tablespoons Sugar
  • 1/2 Teaspoon Fish Sauce (Optional)
  • 1/2 Teaspoon Chili Paste (Optional)
  • 1/2 Pound Carrots, Shredded
  • 4 Baguettes
  • 1/2 Pound Roast Pork or Ham
  • 1 Cucumber, quartered lengthwise
  • 3 Tablespoons Mayonnaise
  • Hot Chili Sauce (optional)
  • Hot Chili Peppers (optional)
  • 1/4 Cup Cilantro or Italian Parsley

Method

Step 1

Mix vinegar with water, sugar and, if desired, fish sauce and chili paste.

Step 2

Marinate carrots in this mixture in refrigerator for at least 6 hours.

Step 3

Halve the baguettes, slice open and spread mayonnaise over bread. Top each half with a thin slice of roast pork.

Step 4

Top with carrots, cucumber and cilantro or parsley.

Step 5

Add chili sauce or peppers to taste.
